Bio

After 29 years teaching British and World Literature in UCO's English department, I transitioned to Professor Emerita status in 2020. Since then I have had more time to write and conduct research than when I was teaching full time. My first publication upon retirement was a chapter in David Kenley's Teaching About Asia in a Time of Pandemic, and I have an article about the smallpox pandemic of 1721 coming out in the next issue of Education About Asia. My main period of interest is the "long eighteenth century," approximately 1650-1850; at this year's meeting of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies I presented a paper on Ihara Saikaku (1642-1693), which will be published as part of a cluster with my fellow panelists in the next volume of Studies in Eighteenth-Century Culture. ASECS is almost entirely comprised of specialists in various areas of western culture, but I've been working for several years now on getting more of my fellow members interested in looking toward the east.
