AAS Call for Proposals

This panel will focus on the circulation of people and ideas between China and India but also exchanges between Chinese and Indian communities in sites beyond their countries of origin. Our aim is to explore how these encounters, and/or flow of ideas are central to negotiating solidarities, while simultaneously, informing their identities and sense of place. In contrast to scholarship that, understandably, focuses on the geopolitical relations between the two nation-states, the border dispute, and/or state sponsored cultural exchange, our panel will examine how the movement of people and ideas facilitates a different understanding of self, community and place, thereby challenging largely homogenous and bounded understandings of national identity and territory.
