Hi everyone,
I am seeking participants to present research as part of a panel on religion and media in Korea, broadly construed. My name is John Grisafi and I'm an incoming postdoctoral fellow at the Nam Center for Korean Studies at the University of Michigan. The panel concept is discussion and analysis of narratives and representations of religion or of beliefs and practices related/adjacent to religion within Korean media, or usage of media by religious actors in order to convey narratives and responses.
At this time, the proposed panel has two participants, being myself and one PhD student. Therefore, my preference is for scholars at other levels or independent scholars to join the panel. The topics to presented by those of us involved thus far are 1) Buddhist (and possibly shamanistic) elements in the Korean webtoon Along with the Gods (신과 함께) and the framing of those elements as religious or cultural, and 2) colonialist narratives of Korean religion in Murayama Chijun's work and the dual legacies of those narratives in contemporary Korean media as exemplified by the film Exhuma (파묘) and drama series Save Me (구해줘).
If you are interested in joining the panel proposal, please contact me by email at john.g.grisafi@gmail with some brief biographical information, a tentative presentation title, and a brief description (not a complete abstract unless you have it already) of the presentation topic.
John
