Theorizing the Sonyŏ: The Aesthetics and Politics of Korean Girlhood
This panel examines the aesthetics and politics of the sonyŏ (Korean girl) in modern and contemporary Korean visual and literary cultures. We are particularly interested in how Korean girlhood can serve as an analytical lens to explore colonialism; state developmentalism and its counter-discourses; and neoliberal ethos and governance in the late capitalist era. We invite papers that consider the political potential and limitations of representations of girls and girlhood across various media-including art, literature, film, and popular culture-from the early twentieth century to the present.
