I am seeking paper presenters and discussants for a panel on Public History and Popular Media in Contemporary South Asia. This panel seeks to explore how public histories are produced and circulated across popular media such as film, digital platforms, television, popular literature and culture, in general, engaging with disciplines including media studies, film studies, literary studies, new media studies, and cultural studies. We are particularly interested in how diverse actors such as state institutions, cultural industries, and independent creators use history in the present, including its uses in pedagogy, memory-making, identity formation, and propaganda. The panel welcomes work that examines both critical and complicit practices of public history, foregrounding the dynamic and contested terrains through which the past is mediated in contemporary South Asia.

As the proposal submission deadline of 5 August is fast approaching, we encourage you to get in touch as soon as possible. Current proposals already engage with topics such as the Partition of India, Bengali regional history, and the Naxalite movements; submissions focusing on other historical periods, events, or geographical regions of South Asia (including the diaspora) will be prioritized.
