Hi all: I am seeking panelists for my proposed panel -- please see the details below,
Thanks, Arjun.
CALL FOR PAPERS:
Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference 2025, Columbus Ohio, March 2025
Panel title: Citizenship and Violence in Southeast Asia
This panel seeks scholars interested in presenting on the interdependence of citizenship and violence in 20th and 21st century perspectives. Beginning with the era of decolonisation in the middle of the last century and continuing into the new millennium, the political process of turning subjects into citizens in Southeast Asia has been marked by violence that both excludes and includes people. Exclusivist violence has often marked minorities as second-class citizens, or even as non-citizens. Such minorities have usually been defined primarily by ethnicity or religion, but exclusivist agendas and polemics have also often relied on class and ideological antagonisms. At the same time, the exercise of violence against national enemies has worked as a powerful means of bringing diverse communities into national citizenship. Groups which might otherwise be marginal or suspect have redeemed themselves in the public eye by joining a national struggle. The panel proposer is an historian of modern Thailand, and welcomes a diverse range of contributions from scholars in history, anthropology, law and politics covering any country or countries in Southeast Asia. Please contact Arjun Subrahmanyan, a.subrahmanyan@murdoch.edu.au. The panel proposal will be submitted to the AAS for consideration by the end of July 2024.
