I'm organizing a panel exploring how acts of designation-including naming, not-naming, misnaming, renaming, and the refusal of designation-shape recognition, belonging, exclusion, and political possibility across South and Southeast Asia. Rather than treating names as descriptive labels, the panel asks what acts of designation make possible, what they foreclose, and how they render persons, communities, and histories available to different forms of relation and power.
Current papers examine personal names, ethnonyms, and the politics of designation in South and Southeast Asia. I'm especially interested in papers that extend the conversation through other registers of designation, including race, religion, caste, gender, sexuality, bureaucracy, medicine, law, citizenship, or other forms of designation.
