Provisional Panel Title: Transnational Formations: Asian Diasporas in North America

I am organizing a panel for AAS 2027 that examines how the "transnational" is imagined, produced, and negotiated through the Asian diasporic experiences in North America. Thinking of the term "transnational" as continually formed through cultural practices, historical narratives, material objects, visual representations, and beyond, this panel invites us to expand the ways in which the term "transnational" is understood between geographic locations. How do histories and cultural objects preserve or reconstruct relationships between diasporic communities and their places of origin? How are ideas of home, border, and nation shaped or reshaped across generations? By focusing on Asian diasporic communities in North America, this panel focuses on how various practices and objects make transnational relationships between objects, people, and places visible, while at the same time obscuring, fragmenting, or contesting them.

We welcome proposals engaging with visual and material culture, migration studies, ethnic studies, and related fields.

We currently have several panelists working on the field of art and visual culture, film and cinematic studies, and histories, and we are seeking a chair, a discussant, and an additional panelist.

If you are interested in participating as a panelist, chair, or discussant, please contact me at qih020@ucsd.edu. Prospective panelists are invited to send a brief abstract of approximately 300 words and a short biography.
