Dear All,
My name is Jusung Lee, and I am a Ph.D. candidate in Religious Studies at Yale University.
I am organizing a panel proposal for the 2027 AAS Annual Conference and am seeking one additional presenter to further strengthen the panel's comparative and transregional scope.
Tentative Panel Title:
Religious Lives in Motion: Mobility, Labor, and Lived Experience in Asia
The panel focuses broadly on early modern and modern Asian religions, with particular attention to mobility, migration, labor, lived religious experience, empire, displacement, conversion, and transregional/transnational networks. We are interested in how religious actors were shaped by movement, work, institutional pressures, and everyday life, rather than only by doctrines, reformist agendas, or elite intellectual projects.
The current papers address Korean Buddhist monastics in colonial Japan, Korean Christian migration to Russia, and early modern Chinese Buddhism. We welcome papers on Buddhism, Christianity, Daoism, Confucianism, new religions, popular religion, and other religious traditions in Asia. Papers may focus on any region of Asia, though we would especially welcome proposals that broaden the geographical scope of the panel beyond Korea and China, including but not limited to South Asia, Southeast Asia, Inner Asia, Japan, or other transregional contexts.
At present, the panel includes a senior scholar at the University of Arizona, a Ph.D. candidate at Sungkyunkwan University, and myself. We would especially welcome inquiries from postdoctoral fellows, lecturers, independent scholars, and faculty at any career stage whose work could expand the regional, methodological, or comparative range of the panel.
If you are interested, please feel free to send me a tentative paper title and abstract. A first draft is completely fine, as the final panel proposal will be revised in light of the participating papers.
Thank you very much for your interest. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Jusung Lee
