Dear colleagues,
We are organizing a panel for the 2027 Association for Asian Studies (AAS) Annual Conference in Boston and are seeking one additional paper presenter.
Our panel explores how dress and clothing function as sites where gender, modernity, colonialism, religion, labor, and state power are negotiated across East and Southeast Asia. Rather than treating clothing as merely decorative or symbolic, we examine dress as a material and cultural practice through which identities are constructed, contested, and transformed.
Current papers include:
- Girls' school uniforms, empire, and modern female identity in colonial East Asia
- Korean schoolgirls' clothing strikes and the negotiation of modern womanhood under Japanese colonial rule
- The Samsui woman's red headscarf in Singapore Chinese literature, exploring how work dress mediates female subjectivity, labor, and modernity
We welcome proposals on topics related to dress and clothing in Asia, including (but not limited to):
- Dress, clothing, uniforms, workwear, or fashion
- Gender and women's history
- Material culture
- Colonialism and postcolonialism
- Religion and dress
- Labor and migration
- Education and schools
- Nationalism, identity, and modernity
Research focusing on East Asia or Southeast Asia is especially welcome.
