Hi all, we are organizing a panel for AAS 2027. The panel examines how different forms of environmental knowledge were produced, organized, and mobilized in Manchuria from the late Qing through the Japanese empire. Bringing together studies of medicine, fisheries, and borderland governance, it asks how scientific and technical investigations transformed the ways people understood, managed, and developed the region's human and nonhuman environments.

We currently have three panelists and Professor Norman Smith of the University of Guelph has agreed to be our discussant.
My paper examines the Manchurian Plague of 1910–1911 and the subsequent work of the North Manchurian Plague Prevention Service (1912–1931). Haoqian Yu, a PhD student from University of Guelph, will discuss the South Manchuria Railway Company's fisheries investigations from Dalian, the Kwantung Leased Territory, and the Yellow Sea into the major rivers, lakes, and freshwater systems of the Manchurian interior from the 1920s through the early 1940s. Ke Zhao, a PhD student from UCSC, will present on the banner system and ginseng production in Qing Manchuria.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Hongqiao Li, PhD student at the University of Iowa.
