My name is Xi Wang, and I am a PhD student in Communication at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. My friends and I are planning an organized panel on Chinese fan culture and are actively seeking 1 to 2 discussants to join us.
Our panel is tentatively titled "Beyond adoration: Cyber-kinship, affective ambivalence, and the making of subjectivities in Chinese digital fandom." Using case studies such as TF Family and transnational K-pop fandom in China, our papers discuss unique fan practices and identities, including "mother fans" (mafen), "parent CP fans" (fumu CP fen), "midwife fans" (jiesheng), and "abusive fans" (ruzhui).
Currently, our panel consists entirely of graduate students. We are hoping to invite senior scholars (postdoc level or above) to serve as our discussant(s). If your research intersects with digital culture, media studies, fandom, affect theory, or gender and sexuality in East Asia, we would be absolutely honored to have your mentorship and critical insights on our work!
