Panel tentative title: Concepts under Pressure: East Asian Cases and Social Science Theory
One of our panelists is no longer able to participate, and we are looking for one additional presenter as well as one or two discussants for a panel proposal to the 2027 AAS Conference in Boston.
The panel asks how East Asian cases can contribute to the refinement, extension, or reconceptualization of concepts in the social sciences. Rather than treating East Asia simply as a site for applying or testing theories developed elsewhere, we are interested in papers that demonstrate how empirical cases from the region can reshape broader conceptual and theoretical debates.
Our current papers examine:
· contemporary public diplomacy through the case of South Korea, asking what East Asian experiences contribute to public diplomacy theory; and
· industrial democratization in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, reconsidering established understandings of the developmental state.
We welcome papers from any social science discipline-or interdisciplinary work-that engage with a broader theoretical or conceptual question through East Asian cases. Possible themes include (but are certainly not limited to) the reconceptualization of democracy, nationalism, borders, identity, diplomacy, governance, or political economy.
