My research examines the role of translation as a selective and ideological process in shaping gender discourses in early twentieth-century China, with particular attention to intra-Asian cultural flows. My paper focuses on The Ladies' Journal (婦女雜誌, 1915–1931), a commercially successful women's magazine published in Republican China. Through close analysis of its Japanese-to-Chinese translations, I explore how the journal constructed a reformist vision of the New Woman by promoting practical modernity and suppressing emotional or radical feminist voices. Methodologically, the paper foregrounds the politics of omission and reads absence as ideological presence in translation.
