Hello colleagues,
I hope to submit a proposal based on my current research on performative, visual, and spatial rhetorics under colonialism, focusing on 이화전문학교 Ewha Women's College in Korea during Japanese occupation.
My paper looks at sources connected to the construction of and relocation to the college's new campus in 신촌 Sinchon in 1934-1935, studying accounts in newspapers and autobiographies. I am interested in how these sources reveal differing rhetorical meanings among the Korean and American participants, as school members attempted to construct and define their community's legacy in the context of Japanese colonization and economic hardship.
I think this paper could connect well with other papers on colonialism, rhetorics, and studies of rituals/performances, among others.
Sincerely,
Nathan
