AAS-in-Asia Call for Proposals

    Hello colleagues,

I hope to submit a proposal based on my current research on performative, visual, and spatial rhetorics under colonialism, focusing on 이화전문학교 Ewha Women's College in Korea during Japanese occupation.

My paper looks at sources connected to the construction of and relocation to the college's new campus in 신촌 Sinchon in 1934-1935, studying accounts in newspapers and autobiographies. I am interested in how these sources reveal differing rhetorical meanings among the Korean and American participants, as school members attempted to construct and define their community's legacy in the context of Japanese colonization and economic hardship.

I think this paper could connect well with other papers on colonialism, rhetorics, and studies of rituals/performances, among others.

    Sincerely,

    Nathan

I am Anthony Sudol and am currently pursuing my MA in Japanese Studies with SOAS University of London. I came across your forum post for AAS in Asia. My paper topic may be related to your theme connected with other papers on colonialism. I am currently working on a paper with the working title
"Cultural Genocide in Korea during Imperial Japan's annexation"
The goal of this paper is to highlight the graduated systematic methods in which Imperial Japan would attempt to commit cultural genocide over Korea, with a particular focus on the annexation period of 1910 to 1945.

If this paper seems like it would be a fit, or if you have any further questions regarding this paper, please let me know. If it isn't, I will not take offense.

    Hi,
I am Kaushalya Bajpayee, Assistant Professor in O.P. Jindal Global University, India. I am working on the traditional genealogies of Maithil community in Bihar, India and want to explore it as a methodological tool for documentation, preservation and memory of a community. I shall explore how the genealogy has been maintained since 13th century and survived colonial /western ideas of archiving and documentation. This genealogy speaks volumes of the institution of family, marriage, caste and other aspects of Indian culture and their preservation in terms of tradition.

Please let me know if this fits into your panel. Looking forward to your response.

    Thanks,

    Hello,

I am Stephanie Chung,  My paper may be related to your proposed panel.

My paper aims at rediscovering the intricate relations between HK filmmakers and their Singapore-Malaysian counterparts via close examination of a set of film (known as the "Nanyang Trilogy"). In particular, I'll address their visual, and spatial rhetoric against the context of post-war decolonialization in Southeast Asia. The paper will try to relate the visual, and spatial rhetoric of these films with the post-war political, socioeconomic contexts in South China and Southeast Asia.

If this fits into your panel, pls. kindly contact me. Many thanks indeed.
