In response to the recent call for late-breaking sessions on emerging/trending topics, I hope to organize a roundtable session on how Taiwanese people view their country's future and plan their own futures accordingly. I am currently seeking at least two other discussants (see below) for the roundtable session. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- perspectives on Taiwan's security situation, especially in the face of doubts that the US will maintain its policy of strategic ambiguity regarding Taiwan's status;
- perspectives on Taiwan's economic/job market outlook, given its AI-driven growth on one hand and its lopsided economy on the other;
- perspectives on Taiwan's domestic politics amid polarization and partisan gridlock;
- perspectives on Taiwan's aging society problem and what this means for future employment and life courses;
- perspectives on Taiwanese people's options to study and live abroad amid the anti-immigration turn in the US, Canada, and other popular destination countries.
Session participants:
Discussants with relevant lived experience are most welcome to join this session; so are discussants whose research provides a close, informed view of Taiwanese lives and/or public opinion. I could personally serve as a session moderator and/or discussant, sharing takeaways from my field research focused on Taiwanese recent graduates' study-abroad and career planning. I might also be joined by a Taiwanese colleague who works for a study-abroad consultancy.
Interested participants are welcome to reply to this post or send an email (eric.deroulet@ubc.ca) with your affiliation, rank, and how your experience and/or research intersects with the session's subject matter.
Thank you,
Eric
