Dear Urmila,
- Individual projects submitted by individuals with only US citizenship/residency will not be accepted. If the primary applicant has double nationality/citizenship, that is fine, as long as they have a legal status held in one of the target regions (see full list of those countries here). The scholars themselves do not need to hold only the nationality of the under-represented regions, project proposals from applicants with double nationalities are accepted.
What countries are eligible?
The Association for Asian Studies invites applications from low- and lower middle-income countries of Southeast Asia (e.g., Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) as well as from less economically advantaged countries and areas of South Asia (e.g., Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and India). When evaluating proposals from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and India, the review committee will prioritize applicants who come from regions and/or institutions with resource and infrastructure constraints. Applications from the Maldives will also be considered.
2. Yes, securing a local partner organization is recommended. Yes, the funds would be disbursed through the university.

Subject: Eligibility to Apply for CHSSG
Hi,
I am asking this question on behalf of a colleague as well as myself.
I read the pages on your AAS site about this grant and eligibility, and had a question.
Under eligibility pt. 1.
"Graduate students (both MA and Ph.D.), junior scholars, and senior scholars are eligible and welcome to apply."
1. Can one apply for this grant on their own as a citizen of the US? Alternatively, does one have to hold double nationality (for instance, OCI from India and a US citizenship) to qualify? Or do the scholars themselves have to only hold nationalities from the under-represented areas in Asia?
2. While we ourselves live and work in the US, would it help if we got an affiliation from a local university in the part of India where we plan to do our research, to attest to the need for our work? If so, what kind of affiliation and proof do we need to provide in the application? And will the monies be dispensed through the university or directly to us?
Thanking you in advance for your response,
Dr. Urmila Mohan
