Dear colleagues,
Dr. Taoyu Yang (Hong Kong Shue Yan University) and I (University of Lodz, Poland) are organizing a panel proposal for the AAS 2026 Annual Conference on the theme of colonial heritage and cities in East Asia.
The panel explores how colonial legacies are remembered, contested, and governed in urban spaces across the region. We already have papers with case studies from China and Seouth Korea, and we are currently looking for:
-
One additional panelist – preferably someone working on Japan or with Japanese colonial heritage elements in their research, but we also welcome other relevant topics related to colonial heritage and memory in East Asian cities.
-
A chair and/or discussant, ideally a more senior scholar.
Topics may include (but are not limited to) politics of memory, urban heritage governance, postcolonial identities, spatial narratives of the past, and city-level approaches to colonial-era sites.
If you're interested, or know someone who might be, please feel free to reach out to me at natalia.matiaszczyk@edu.uni.lodz.pl or via direct message.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Warm regards,
Natalia Matiaszczyk & Taoyu Yang
