    Dear all,

We are seeking panelists and a discussant interested in the processes of boundary-making among religious traditions in Chinese and East Asian history. The panel will explore how religious actors defined orthodoxy, determined what should be included or excluded from authoritative traditions, and how such decisions became institutionalized through texts, rituals, and social practice. We are particularly interested in questions of canon formation, religious authority, textual production, and religious pluralism. More broadly, the panel asks how religious traditions maintained distinctive identities while simultaneously engaging in exchange, borrowing, and coexistence with other traditions. In particular, we hope to explore how efforts to establish orthodoxy and authoritative traditions coexisted with forms of religious pluralism, eclecticism, and interaction across Confucian, Buddhist, Daoist, and popular religious communities.

Anybody who is interested in joining, please contact me (huiqiaoyao@arizona.edu) and Patrick Du (zhanqiu2@illinois.edu) by July 20, preferably as soon as possible. Looking forward to connecting with you!
