Dear all,
We are organizing a Panel for AAS27 in Boston, tentative titled "Mechanical Modernity," which will discuss the evolution and paradigm shifts of mechanical knowledge in East Asia and how they shaped modern states and societies. The term "mechanical" is broadly defined, including large-scale infrastructure such as loom, railway, dams, telegraph, as well as smaller equipments like sewing machines and medical devices.
Time period: 17th to 20th century.
Area: East Asia widely defined.
